Who is Olwyn?

Olwyn trained in Ceramics in London, at Central School of Art and Design, and then became a design teacher. Eventualy dissolusioned with teaching, she became an IT Helpdesk manager and then a full time mother, finally returning to her first love as a potter.

Her Work

Olwyn prefers to work mainly in porcelain, as although this is an unpredictable medium she finds it smoothness responds well to her carved decoration, allowing her to achieve the results she likes. Pieces are initially constructed from the raw clay, left to harden slightly and are then intricately carved before being painted and then fired. Finally some of them are polished, whilst others are glazed or both polished and glazed before being fired again.

Olwyn draws her inspiration from a variety of sources including floral forms the countryside and architecture.

Over the years Olwyn has delivered workshops, projects and learning experiences to a wide variety of groups. These groups of vary in number from a whole school, to small groups of a few people.
Projects have included:
  • Life-size chicken wire sculptures
  • A series of mosaic panels
  • Making terracotta warriors
  • Making Greek pots
  • Plaster casting with Sand

RT bear have a portable Potters wheel that can be brought to a school or other venue to allow everyone to "have a go" at throwing a pot.

The youngest person she has helped to throw a pot is three, the eldest .... well we didn't like to ask.
